# About Direct Assignment & On-Demand Training

When configured, Direct Assignment is a method of "on-demand" training, where Training Admins manually assign training for an individual *Training Requirement* or all requirements in a *Curriculum* to one or more Learners who typically do not already have those records in their Training Matrix. Conceptually, Direct Assignment is one method of assigning training without a *Learner Role*.

Direct Assignment is an early Veeva Training feature that is now supplemented by newer on-demand training methods. These methods are frequently preferable to Direct Assignment and as such Training and Study Training Admins may instead consider:

* **Assign to Learner**: An object action for on-demand training when a requirement should additionally be added to a Learner's Training Matrix, and is another method of assigning training without a *Learner Role*. This means the Learner will continually receive further training, for example when Training Materials are revised. See additional details about how the *Assign to Learner* action differs from Direct Assignment.
* **Require Retraining**: An object action for on-demand training when a Learner already has a requirement in their Training Matrix, and they must re-train for any reason, for example as the result of a CAPA investigation. See additional details about how the *Require Retraining* action differs from Direct Assignment.

**Note**: All on-demand training methods must be configured in Veeva Training and Study Training Vaults.
